Strategic clarity for rapid expansion

The situation:

In 1991, Baylor University established what would become one of the nation’s most preeminent seminaries. In 2018, Baylor launched a $1.1 billion capital campaign in support of an ambitious strategic plan. In 2022, Truett Seminary sought to develop its own 5-year plan. Facing a rapid growth rate, the addition of new campuses, and a cluster of high-profile faculty members announcing retirement, the moment was critical to clarify the priorities that would ensure continued success.

The insight

Following several years of aggressive growth across many areas, Truett was in a financially strong position. Under the surface, however, there was tension. Listening sessions were held with faculty, staff, and students, to reveal what was most fundamental about Truett’s success and where it risked getting off track. There was a growing sense that the organization had lost its focus and identity. A SWOT analysis was performed to identify areas of both trouble and potential.

The strategy

Our 5-year strategy completely lacked bold new initiatives or a disruptive vision—and it was exactly what was needed to reinvigorate students and stakeholders. The final strategic plan clarified the defining characteristics of a uniquely Truett education, and key pillars and priorities to ensure that they continue to inform the shape of progress and growth. It laid a path for a future that can accommodate change while honoring the cherished values of the institution and its place in the world.
